Breast cancer is something we often hear about but rarely think will happen to us. I was no different. As a busy mother, business owner, and fitness enthusiast, I never wanted to become part of the 1 in 8 women diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother died from breast cancer when I was 7. Even though I was aware and vigilant, in 2015, my life took an unexpected turn when I heard the words no woman wants to hear: "You have breast cancer."
It was a shocking and surreal moment, but one that has shaped me into the person I am today—a survivor, advocate, and coach, dedicated to helping women prioritize their health and fitness. Through my journey, I’ve learned that breast cancer can happen to anyone, no matter how healthy you are, and early detection is absolutely critical in saving lives.
When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. Like many women, I had always been active, ate well, and felt strong. Breast cancer didn’t seem like something that could affect someone like me. But the reality is that breast cancer doesn’t discriminate. It affects women of all ages, races, and fitness levels. It can strike when you least expect it.
After my diagnosis, I underwent surgery, followed by treatment. It was a challenging time, both physically and emotionally. But through it all, one thing remained clear—my early detection through regular screenings had given me the best possible chance at recovery.
Thanks to catching it early, I was able to take swift action, and today, I’m cancer-free. However, my journey didn’t end there. I knew I wanted to use my experience to help others navigate their own challenges, whether they’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer or are looking for ways to take better care of themselves.
Breast cancer is no longer a death sentence, thanks to advancements in screening and treatment. However, the key to survival is early detection. Women who catch their breast cancer in the early stages have a much higher chance of successful treatment and recovery.
Regular screenings—whether it’s mammograms, self-exams, or clinical breast exams—are your best defense against breast cancer. Here’s why:
Early Detection Saves Lives: When breast cancer is found early, the 5-year survival rate is nearly 99%. This drops significantly when it’s caught at a later stage.
Treatment is More Effective: The earlier breast cancer is detected, the more treatment options you have, and the less invasive those treatments may need to be.
It Can Happen to Anyone: As I mentioned earlier, no one is immune to breast cancer. Even if you’re young, fit, and healthy, regular screenings are essential.
It’s easy to put off your health when life gets busy, but taking a few simple steps can make a world of difference. Here are actionable steps you can take today to prioritize your breast health:
If you’re over 40, schedule annual mammograms. If you have a family history of breast cancer, you may need to start earlier. Speak to your doctor about your individual risk factors.
Get familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. Perform a self-exam each month and report any changes—such as lumps, discharge, or skin changes—to your doctor right away.
Breast cancer symptoms aren’t always visible through lumps. Be mindful of any unusual pain, swelling, or changes in the size or shape of your breasts. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, don’t ignore it.
If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, your risk may be higher. Speak with your healthcare provider about genetic testing or starting screenings earlier.
Encourage the women in your life to prioritize their health by scheduling their mammograms and staying informed about breast cancer risks. Early detection isn’t just about you—it’s about all the women you care about.
As women, we often put everyone else first—our families, our work, our friends—but we need to remember that we can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of our health, both physically and mentally, is the most important thing we can do for ourselves and our loved ones.
I’ve learned firsthand how crucial it is to listen to our bodies and prioritize self-care. Whether it’s scheduling regular health checks or finding time for exercise and nutrition, we need to make ourselves a priority.
